One of the most common questions engineers ask is whether an Electromagnetic Flow Meter can measure diesel fuel, lubricating oil, gasoline, LPG, LNG, or gas. The answer is no. Although Electromagnetic Flow Meters are among the most accurate flow measurement technologies available, they are specifically designed for electrically conductive liquids.
Electromagnetic Flow Meters operate according to Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction. As conductive liquid flows through a magnetic field, an electrical voltage is generated. This voltage is directly proportional to the flow velocity and is converted into flow rate and total flow measurements.
For this principle to work, the process liquid must have a minimum electrical conductivity, typically around 5 µS/cm depending on the manufacturer. Conductive liquids such as water, wastewater, slurry, chemical solutions, acids, and alkalis are ideal applications for Electromagnetic Flow Meters.
Non-conductive fluids including diesel fuel, gasoline, lubricating oil, vegetable oil, LPG, LNG, air, and natural gas cannot generate the electrical signal required for measurement. As a result, Electromagnetic Flow Meters cannot accurately measure these fluids.
For non-conductive liquids such as fuels and oils, Turbine Flow Meters and Positive Displacement Flow Meters are commonly recommended. For gas measurement, technologies such as Thermal Mass Flow Meters, Vortex Flow Meters, and Coriolis Mass Flow Meters are generally more suitable.
Selecting the wrong flow meter technology often leads to inaccurate measurements, unnecessary costs, and installation problems. Understanding the properties of the process fluid before purchasing a flow meter is essential for achieving reliable and efficient operation.
