Many people assume that a Differential Pressure Transmitter (DP Transmitter) and a Pressure Transmitter perform the same function. In reality, they are designed for different measurement purposes and industrial applications. Understanding these differences helps ensure the correct instrument is selected for reliable process control.
A Pressure Transmitter measures pressure at a single point relative to a reference such as atmospheric pressure (Gauge Pressure) or vacuum (Absolute Pressure). It is commonly used to monitor pressure in pipelines, pumps, tanks, compressors, boilers, and hydraulic systems.
A Differential Pressure Transmitter, on the other hand, measures the pressure difference between two separate points using High Pressure (HP) and Low Pressure (LP) ports. The measured differential pressure can then be used for various industrial applications beyond simple pressure monitoring.
One of the most common applications is flow measurement. When combined with primary flow elements such as Orifice Plates, Venturi Tubes, or Flow Nozzles, the DP Transmitter calculates flow rate based on pressure difference. This method remains one of the most reliable and widely accepted flow measurement techniques in industrial processes.
Differential Pressure Transmitters are also widely used for closed tank level measurement. By comparing pressure at the bottom and top of a vessel, the transmitter accurately determines liquid level without direct contact with the process media.
Another important application is filter monitoring. While a standard Pressure Transmitter measures pressure at only one location, a DP Transmitter measures pressure before and after the filter, allowing maintenance personnel to detect clogging before it affects production.
If your application only requires monitoring pressure at a single point, a standard Pressure Transmitter is usually sufficient. However, if you need accurate flow measurement, closed tank level measurement, or differential pressure monitoring, a Differential Pressure Transmitter is the preferred solution.
